The US Embassy in Ankara and the Turkish Embassy in Washington suspended the visa service of the two countries citizens, as officially reported the diplomatic departments.

Earlier it was reported that the representative of the General US Consulate in Istanbul Metin Topuz, a Turkish citizen, was arrested on charges of having links with the Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen and his organization staying in the United States.

According to Ankara, the preacher is responsible for the attempt of the military coup in Turkey last year. Washington ignored Turkey's demands for his extradition.

As reported by the Turkish agency Anadolu, Topuz was charged with espionage and attempts to disrupt the constitutional system in the country.

"Recent events force the US government to review the Turkish government promises to ensure the safety of the American embassy and its staff", - the US embassy said.

In the process of reassessment, the US authorities decided to "minimize the number of visitors of our embassy and consulates, the restrictions come into force after the announcement of the suspension of the issuance of visas by the US diplomatic missions in Turkey".

Similar steps were immediately taken by the Turkish side, the statement of the Turkish embassy in Washington repeated the statement of the American embassy in Ankara with the replacement of the countries names.
