TYPICAL ELEMENTS OF THE TRIP
THE VAST AND SPLENDID RUSSIA
JOURNEY ACROSS RUSSIA

The most popular tourist destinations in Russia are:

1. The Trans-Siberian Express

The most unique tour is a railway journey on the legendary Trans-Siberian Railway running from St. Petersburg or Moscow to Vladivostok.

During a 7-day journey you will overcome 10 000 km and cross a record 8 time zones. Endless expanses, untouched nature and amazing cultural attractions are linked together by a steel groundwork!

Major cities: Moscow – Nizhny Novgorod – Kazan – Yekaterinburg – Novosibirsk – Krasnoyarsk – Irkutsk – Lake Baikal – Ulan-Ude – Chita – Blagoveshchensk – Khabarovsk – Vladivostok. While travelling on your own, you may stop and visit any of these big historic cities.

You can also combine a trip to Russia with a trip to China or Mongolia. For example, after visiting China and Mongolia you can continue your journey in Russia or vice versa. It is worth mentioning that some of the Russian Trans-Siberian Railway tours include a trip through Mongolia.

The cost of tours varies from $2500 for journeys by regular trains up to $15 000 for journeys by Golden Eagle Luxury Trains – www.otkrytie.ru.

See more detailed information on Moscow and St. Petersburg if you start your journey from the center of Russia.

Airport of Vladivostok – www.vvo.aero.

2. Endless Baikal

The deep lake Baikal, also called "Blue Eye of Siberia", "Sacred Sea" or "Diamond of the Planet", holds the world's largest reserve of fresh water of a unique composition.

The lake length is 663 km, and the depth is more than 1 km.

The choice of excursions in the lake as well as in its surroundings is very wide – www.baikalov.ru.

The nearest airport is in Irkutsk – www.iktport.ru.

3. Volcanoes and geysers of Kamchatka

The unique region famous for its active volcanoes, hot springs, mountain rivers, picturesque paths and settlements which inhabitants have not changed their lifestyle over the past hundred years. The amazing beauty of the Valley of Geysers opens for tourists the secrets of volcanic processes; in the south of Kamchatka you can personally observe the life of the brown bears and the spawning of Pacific salmon.

The nearest airport is in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky – www.airport-pkc.ru.

4. Solovetsky Islands

On a small archipelago in the White Sea was formed a special natural, historical and cultural complex which has no analogues in the world.

The most interesting is the Solovetsky Island which is home to one of Russia’s best-known monasteries founded in the 15th century. In the middle of the 20th century it was transformed into one of the USSR’s most notorious prison camps.

The nearest airports are in Arkhangelsk – www.arhaero.ru and Solovki – www.aviado.ru/airport/solovki.
ARRIVAL TO RUSSIA

Russia is a very big country, that’s why we recommend you to select an airport of arrival as close to the place of your journey as possible.

Often the most convenient flight route passes with a stopover in Moscow at domestic flights. You may want to spend a few days in the capital, in this case, see detailed information on Moscow and St. Petersburg.

To select and book online tickets, visit www.skyscanner.ru, www.momondo.ru.

TRAVEL ACROSS RUSSIA

Due to the largeness and insufficient assimilation of distant areas of the country, we recommend you to plan your route carefully in advance, as it may require several transport changes.

For example, you may start travelling by train – www.rzd.ru, than change it to a bus – www.takebus.ru or use water transport – www.bestrussiancruises.com.

Sometimes it is necessary to book a helicopter in advance in order to admire the Valley of Geysers of Kamchatka, for example.

You can also rent a car – www.rentalcars.com.

However, we do not recommend using this option due to the lack of development of this service and the specific road traffic in Russia.

ACCOMMODATION

We recommend you to book accommodation well in advance. The prices in the provinces are much lower than in Moscow.

A room in 4-5 stars hotels costs from RUB 2500 (~$40) per day.

A room in 2-3 stars hotels costs from RUB 1300 (~$22) per day.

To book a hotel room, you can use the following online services: www.booking.com, www.hotels.com.

RESTAURANTS AND CAFES

Russia offers the tourists a wide range of restaurants, cafes and bars for any taste and budget.

A dinner in high-end restaurants may cost from RUB 3000 (~$50).

In mid-range restaurants and cafes an average bill may be RUB 1000 (~$17) per person.

Many restaurants offer lunch specials a set of several courses costing RUB 300 (~$5) and valid in the afternoon.

To have the food delivered to your home or hotel room, you can use the following services: www.delivery-club.ru, www.zakazaka.ru.

You can find more detailed information on restaurants and cafés location, their menu and customer reviews as well as make online booking on www.tripadvisor.ru.

TOURIST AND ENTERTAINMENT PROGRAMS

The choice of different excursions, historic sites and entertainment facilities in big Russian cities is very wide. Besides, the prices are generally lower than in most European cities.

As a rule, the only available entertainments in the protected and insufficiently assimilated areas are nature tours and excursions. Though, you will surely enjoy the acquaintance and communication with the locals who are open-minded, sincere and friendly people, although they do not speak any foreign languages. In some small museums and antique shops you may find truly unique objects.

You can find more detailed information regarding exhibitions, museums, theaters and clubs, their hours of operation and location in big cities and small towns of Russia, as well as book tickets on www.tripadvisor.ru.

BE ONLINE!

International roaming is very expensive in Russia, so we strongly recommend you to purchase a SIM card from one of the four all-Russian mobile phone operators: www.mts.ru, www.beeline.ru, www.megafon.ru, www.tele2.ru.

For example, the tariff plan "Smart" for RUB 550 (~$9) per month includes 600 minutes for calls across Russia and 4 GB of Internet – www.mts.ru/smart.

If you need just a few calls, you may use tariff plans without subscription fee. For example, the tariff plan "Vse prosto" supposes RUB 1.6 ($0,03) per minute for calls in one region of Russia – www.megafon.ru/vse_prosto.

In Russia the cost of calls and using Internet may differ depending on the region. To save money, we recommend connecting additional options.

Mobile calls from Russia to other countries are very expensive. We recommend using Skype, WhatsApp and Viber services via the mobile Internet and Wi-Fi which is often provided for free in cafes and hotels.
